Highlights vs Balayage

Have you ever thought about what is the difference between highlights and balayage? We have, here at Open Hair Miami Salon, where we are the hair specialists for color, highlights, and balayage.

The word balayage first originated in France, where its direct definition means “to sweep”. Balayage is a free hand painting technique that creates a super blended multi tonal sun kissed result. It is a visual hand technique that allows your hair stylist to personalize your color placement according to your haircut and facial features and show the stylist’s artistry. It is a process without foils, but some techniques do incorporate some film to achieve lighter results.

Highlights, on the other hand, almost always use foils. Specific section techniques are used to make sure hair is evenly highlighted with lightener or dye that is then applied from the root to end leaving some natural hair in between. This technique is then sealed with foils to lighten the strand that’s in the foils.
